Name That Critic

Who was the lovely critic of Van Til who penned these fine words?

I suggest that Van Til’s apologetics, because it does not grow out of painstaking and complete mastery of great Christian texts, ancient, medieval, and modern, is twisted and victimized by the categories and techniques of the idealists whose works he read in his student days.

    Barth?

    Sproul?

    I vote Sproul…

  3. Nicholas T. Batzig says:

It seems that our mysterious author left the writings of the Reformation (I am thinking specifically of Calvin) out of his critique. Could this be a mere coincident? Unless the Reformation would be considered part of the modern era.

  4. Camden Bucey says:

It was neither Barth nor Sproul. It’s a little more obscure than that. I’ll let the guessing continue for just a little while longer.

    Robbins?

    Gordon Clark?

It was Jesse De Boer in part three of his series in the 1953 Calvin Forum. Van Til deals with the criticisms of the De Boers in Defense of the Faith.

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve. (Romans 16:17-18)
