John Gerstner Lectures

If you’ve never listened to the later Dr. John H. Gerstner you are neglecting a benefit for your soul from one of God’s wonderful gifts to the church. Dr. Gerstner (1914-1996) was “Professor of Church History at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Knox Theological Seminary. He was an authority on the life and theology of Jonathan Edwards. Gerstner counted among his students R.C. Sproul and wrote several books, including Primitive Theology.” The principle work for which he is remembered is The Rational Biblical Theology of Jonathan Edwards. You can read a short memorial of his life and work here.

You can read two of Dr. Gerstner’s articles over at Lionier’s website. The first is “God’s Providence: a Two Edged Sword (Part 3),” and the second “True and False Assurance.”

Ligonier has also posted several of Dr. Gerstner’s audio lecture series:

Agreed. His teaching is a holy zeal of confessional Presbyterianism. I hope Ligonier re-issues his Handout Theology, the massive 100 audio/video lectures of systematic theology in the Puritan tradition.

Ligonier released his handout theology in December 2016. You can listen to it free on their app or on their website. I’m currently listening to it and it’s such a blessing!

  2. I met Dr. Gerstner in 1988 while a student at The Master’s Seminary (me not him). I was in charge of getting him to wherever he needed to go. He stayed in my apartment while my wife and I stayed with friends. He never got my name right. My name is Rich Barcellos. On the phone he called me “Barcujian” and some other name I can’t remember. I must have said Barcellos ten times to him. Still, he never got it right. The last day he was with us, he stood up before the entire faculty and student body and said, “I’d like to thank Rich Barcelou for housing such an unlikely transient as myself,” while gasping for air. The name stuck. Since then, I have tagged “Barcelou” as a genitive of Gersninian auricular distortion. Cf. Wallace’s third edition and the discussion there.

  3. there’s more. He spoke on the five points at the College. One of the students was terrified. The student wrote a note to Dr. Gerstner, pouring out his soul. The College put it in my student box, asking for me to forward it to him. I did so. Two weeks later I received an autographed copy of one of his books with a note asking me to get his response to the student. I could not hold myself back from reading it, so I did. I could barely read his writing. I do know that his answers were very tender and pointed the student to Christ.

If anyone knows a source to get a copy of the Video series that he did on The Rational Biblical Theology of Jonathan Edwards please let me know. I would also be ok with just the audio. I saw this video series >10 years ago and was amazed, it was great. I wish Ligionier made all of his stuff available.

    thanks

I have been a “student” of Dr. Gerstner for many years. I find his style, passion, and knowledge of the Word and ways of Christ entirely compelling. I have been working to make RARE audio materials available online and a wonderful collection was recently made available to me. I have been transferring the material from cassette tape to digital and am posting them on You Tube. Please go to youtube and search under, “Dr John Gerstner” to locate these rare resources. I will be regularly posting more in the weeks and months ahead.

I also love Dr Gerstner’s teaching. I was recently given an old Ligonier tape series by Dr Gerstner called “giants of the Christian faith.” I plan on transferring them to MP3 and I’d happy to share those files with you.
