1 Corinthians 9:19 has become one of the most frequently quoted Bible verses over the past 5 years. But do people really understand what the apostle Paul is saying there? I would only add to Jay’s explanation that Paul meant he would not offend by criticizing a particular cultural distinction if it was not, in and of itself, a sinful practice.
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve. (Romans 16:17-18)
